DNA Health Pathway

From Functional Medicine Associates

A bespoke and individualised health assessment and plan based on your real genetic data.

You no longer have to wonder about how to optimise your health. We will provide you with your own personal road map and manual you need to make decisions that will benefit you in the long run.

Everyone has inherited genetic variations that increase or decrease your susceptibility to various health conditions. Our DNA Health testing pathway can help to reveal your genetic variations and risks.

The good news is, just because we see some genetic predispositions to disease it doesn't mean that these genes are going to play out and result in disease. This is the beauty of this type of Functional Medicine. With your test results and informed lifestyle plan, you have a say in how your life plays out.

Exactly what is a DNA Health test?

DNA health testing involves providing a sample of your DNA which is sent to a lab for analysis. Using the extensive report, we can predict your risk of developing certain diseases based on what gene variants are present in your code.

We don’t just give you your DNA results. We combine your results with your current and past lifestyle and provide you with a detailed analysis on what may be impacting your health. We then help you to make real changes based on your report.

How does the DNA Health Pathway work?

The DNA Health Pathway isn’t just a genetic test. It is an in depth health assessment that involves 5 steps.

Our DNA Health Pathway follows this structure...

Step 1: Blood test & questionnaire
plus button

You will be asked to complete a pre participation questionnaire on our secure online medical platform "Living Matrix" This gives us the background and context to your health.

A DNA testing kit will also be sent out to you. The kit contains full instructions for you to provide a finger prick blood sample (for DNA) along with instructions and paper work for returning the sample to the laboratory for analysis.

Step 2: Your practitioner will assess your data and questionnaire
plus button

The analysis of your sample takes up to 4 weeks and whilst we are awaiting your results to come back your practitioner is reading through and working on your background notes. You may be contacted in this time to answer more questions about your health.

A consultation date will be arranged in anticipation of the results.

Step 3: Video consultation
plus button

You will have a 2 hour recorded Zoom consultation to discuss the results of the test. During the consultation your practitioner will discuss in detail your DNA test results in the context of the health and medical information you have previously provided.
Key areas for action will be highlighted and explained.

Step 4: Test report & video recording
plus button

You will receive your 30 page DNA Health report. The report will include summary highlights in each key biological area. You will also receive an additional summary page written by your practitioner, highlighting key points discussed in the consultation. This may include additional actions, such as testing, dietary, lifestyle and nutrient supplementation.

A video recording of your consultation and your report will be sent to you electronically.

Step 5: Action
plus button

You will now be ready to take action and make a serious impact on your health and wellbeing for the long term.

“I am very grateful for Pete's support and expertise. The session last week was fantastic and gave me loads to think about and a great steer on the changes I need to make. I’ve already started implementing some things and plan to review the report and video recording this week to make a plan for some of the other things we discussed.

Having the recording will be invaluable in helping me review the report and remember what Pete so eloquently explained. Pete's ability to take complex information and distill it into interesting and easy-to-understand points/actions are fantastic and incredibly useful.

Looking forward to getting the recommendations about supplements and future testing.”

“Having the DNA Health test was an eye opener for me. Having spent so much of my life blaming myself for my lack of willpower, inability to succeed long term with weight loss and better health, I was more than pleasantly surprised to realise that it's not all my fault after all!

My genetics show that I am predisposed to certain behaviours and it's not something that I have control over. That knowledge seemed to shift my thinking almost overnight! This test enabled me to look at things in a different way, knowing my genes play a part has removed the guilt which could weigh heavy at times. The knock-on effect has been that I've found it easier to make better choices, and I am able to more readily accept that it's ok to have a bad day, because everyone does from time to time. This test has also shown the areas where I may be more at risk in the future, and so will help me to minimise or reduce those risks through changes to diet, or adding in supplements, etc. This test has given me an explanation of why some things are subconsciously affecting my behaviour, and taking this forward feels like a huge release for me.

I wish I'd taken this sooner!”

DNA Health Testing FAQs

What is DNA Health testing?
plus button

DNA Health is a comprehensive nutrigenetics test that reports on gene variants in key biological processes that govern health and disease.

What is the benefit of DNA Health testing?
plus button

DNA Health testing allows you to more accurately personalise health advice to the individual rather than population led health advice.

How will DNA Health testing help me?
plus button

With an experienced practitioner, the DNA Health test will establish the optimal nutrition, lifestyle and key health testing necessary for good health, longevity and disease risk mitigation.

How long does DNA Health testing take?
plus button

From taking the blood spot sample to test results, DNA Health testing can take up to 4 weeks.

How does DNA Health testing work?
plus button

You give a simple blood spot prick from your finger which is then sent to the lab to have your DNA analysed.

What is the link between DNA and health?
plus button

Your genes have a profound influence, both good and bad, on health outcomes. Having the knowledge of your gene variants allows you to act upon that information. By doing this you reduce these gene influences that promote illness and disease by choosing the lifestyle choices that balance off their risk. It could be a change in the diet, a particular supplement or a specific exercise regime. This knowledge increases your ability for better health.

What will my DNA Health results show me?
plus button

The DNA Health test analyses and reports on gene variants in the following areas; Lipid metabolism, Methylation, Detoxification, Inflammation and Oxidative stress, Insulin sensitivity, Bone health and Food responsiveness.

DNA Health provides insight to identify genetic weaknesses in these pathways and offers guidance to improve, or mitigate these weaknesses using targeted diet, lifestyle and nutraceutical interventions.

Can you have a DNA Health test while pregnant?
plus button

Yes you can have a DNA Health test while pregnant.

What does it mean to have more pro-inflammatory genes?
plus button

Having more pro-inflammatory genes means that an individual may have a greater risk of raised inflammation over time. This may increase their risk of chronic disease.

What is lipid metabolism?
plus button

Lipid metabolism is the making of and destruction of lipids in cells, involving the breakdown or storage of fats for energy and the making of structural and functional lipids, such as those involved in the construction of cell membranes.

What is oxidative stress?
plus button

Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralisation by antioxidants.

This process is actually good for us in small amounts but harmful if imbalanced and ongoing at high levels. A free radical is an oxygen containing molecule that has one or more unpaired electrons, making it highly reactive with other molecules.

What does bone health mean?
plus button

Bone health is about keeping bones strong and healthy particularly as we age. Eating foods rich in calcium and Vitamin D, getting daily exercise to load the bones and understanding gene risk for osteoporosis are important.

What is insulin sensitivity?
plus button

Insulin sensitivity refers to how sensitive the body’s cells are in response to the hormone insulin. High insulin sensitivity allows the cells of the body to use blood glucose more effectively, reducing blood sugar and reducing risk for diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, Obesity and Alzheimers.

Adopting lifestyle and dietary changes such as regular exercise and reducing refined sugar in the diet  help improve this sensitivity.
